Pompeii is the only archaeological site in the world able to show the appearance of an ancient Roman center in its entirety. Rich in traffic and vibrant with life, the city was crystallized by the famous eruption of 79 AD, during which a rain of ashes and lapilli engulfed everything: houses, inhabitants, streets, public buildings, and everyday objects. Everything was “frozen” in a terrible snapshot.
However, this catastrophe, this cataclysm, deserves credit for allowing the exceptional preservation of the city and its treasures: the urban layout, monumental buildings, the homes of ordinary people, and the splendid residences adorned with mosaics and famous wall paintings.
With its 44 hectares of excavated area, Pompeii is one of the most famous and visited archaeological sites in the world, with over two million visitors annually.
