The Square represents the most significant sacred space in the city of Volterra. The complex of the Ancient Hospital of Santa Maria Maddalena, already documented in the twelfth century, has undergone far-sighted restoration aimed at bringing to light the Etruscan, Roman, and medieval vestiges preserved there, as well as hosting an Exhibition Study Center where donations of ancient and contemporary works of art are displayed.
